VPX Overview
The design of cost effective, high performance embedded computers to meet the new challenges in transport, aerospace and defense applications needed a new standard to allow COTS interoperability. Poised to become the de facto standard for Rugged and COTS computing, VPX (VITA 46) is quickly becoming a must in all large government programs worldwide.
VPX (VITA 46) specifications establish a new direction for the next revolution in bus boards. VPX is a proposed ANSI standard which breaks out from the traditional connector scheme of VMEbus to merge the latest in connector and packaging technology with the latest in bus and serial fabric technology. VPX combines best-in-class technologies to assure a very long technology cycle similar to that of the original VMEbus solutions. Traditional parallel VMEbus will continue to be supported by VPX through bridging schemes that assure a solid migration pathway.

VPX Tech Highlights

The new VPX (VITA 46) standards have been developed by a working group consisting of leading defense and aerospace suppliers.
The standards provide high speed serial interconnects on 3U and 6U form factors that enable system developers to exploit the latest serial switched fabrics for designing sophisticated network-centric defense/aerospace applications.
At the heart of the new VPX standard is the MutiGig RT2 connector from Tyco that enables transfer rates of up to 6.25 Gbits/sec, making it an ideal architecture for supporting serial switched fabrics like PCI and SRIO that are rapidly moving into the defense/aerospace sector.
Kontron’s VPX product family implements:
- VITA 46.0 Base Specification
- VITA 46.4 PCIe Mapping
- VITA 46.7 Ethernet Core Fabric
- VITA 46.9 XMC/PMC Mapping
